The hype surrounding “Preacher” season two continues to grow, especially with the recent release of promotional photos for the show’s anticipated return. Set to premiere on June 25, season two sees the comeback of its trio of protagonists: small-town preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), his ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and vampire friend Cassidy (Joe Gilgun). The season one finale saw the aforementioned characters going on a road trip in search of God, thus setting the stage for the show’s second season and the mayhem that will ensue on their journey.

In addition to the release of promotional images, a plot synopsis has also been revealed, giving more insight on what viewers can expect upon the show’s return. As per ScreenRant, part of the trio’s adventure will also cover New Orleans. There, they will encounter the Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish), with more of an exploration on the ‘cowboy villain’ whom the audience met in season one. Additionally, season two will also see the introduction of the character called Herr Starr, who was previously touched on in the previous season.

On the topic of other characters making appearances in the upcoming season, Cooper was careful not to drop any conclusive details. “I don’t know how much I can give away about who’s coming to the show,” he told IGN. “I think they’ve chosen the characters very wisely though. They get slowly dropped in and I think they’ll make things — well, you’ll see. There’s this one certainly that I have a confrontation with. Actually, two major characters from the comics that I have a big confrontation with, that’s very, very exciting. And it will be the main, sort of, influence for Jesse’s new idea of himself and what leads him forward and what gives him power to continue.”

Whereas the first season introduced the world to “Preacher” and its universe, acting as a sort of prequel, season two will delve into more familiar territory, sticking closer to its source material. Based on the comic book series of the same name (written by Garth Ennis), the show may see a more saturated focus on the characters portrayed by Cooper, Negga and Gilgun.

Previously, it was revealed that actress Gianna LePera — who portrayed Tracy Roach in a recurring role back in season one — was on set to shoot some scenes with both Cooper and Ian Colletti, the latter of whom portrays Eugene Root. This prompted some fans to speculate that season two may show a flashback scene detailing the history between Tracy and Eugene. Alternatively, another theory that surfaced involved Jesse going to hell in order to save Eugene, as the character was last seen being sent to the underworld in season one.
