Souvenir shops inside the Vatican City must have lost sales on Sunday since Pope Francis gave away that day 20,000 rosaries to pilgrims in St Peter's Square.

Rosaries are one of the best-selling items in souvenir shops inside the Holy See.

The pontiff, while dispensing in the rosaries in pill boxes, even joked that he is a pharmacist and declared prayer, not laughter, as the best medicine for the heart.

The box has the label Misericorina, 59 Beads for the Heart and has the design of a human heart. It has instructions in several languages which reads, "Can be used once a day, but in case of emergency can be taken as much as the sole needs."

It added, "The dose is the same for adults and children."

Actually, the pope could really be knowledgeable in the production of medicine since he is a chemistry graduate. But for now, he prefers the title spiritual doctor and reminded the 80,000 tourists who were in the square, "Don't forget to take your medicine, because it is good for the heart, the soul, the whole life."

The rosary distribution comes two weeks after the Catholic world observed the rosary month in October. In August, he urged Catholics to pray the rosary as their weapon in the fight against evil.

For centuries, the rosary had three sets of mysteries to remember the life of Jesus Christ. These were the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries. In 2002. Pope John Paul II introduced an optional set of mysteries named Luminous mysteries.
