We've all been guilty of getting that extra sliver of pecan pie and downing that one last cup of eggnog then immediately thinking that we'll start the diet tomorrow.

But that "tomorrow" stretches on to a few days, then a few weeks and eventually, all the pounds have settled into your respective weight. This holiday season, break out of the trap by trying these simple and effective tips.

1. Cut the sugar habit: With more and more studies pointing towards the realities of sugar addiction, one would do well to rethink eating another sugary treat. Experts now believe that sugar can and does affect the brain in ways that is not unlike the effects of drugs and alcohol- results that more often than not, induce a cycle of bingeing and craving.

Furthermore, sugary holiday treats are also packed with fat leading to a double whammy of weight gain.

Quick fix: Eliminate all desserts for 3 consecutive days. This should be enough time for the cravings to subside.

2. Reprogram your stomach: The sad truth is once the holidays come in, overeating starts. This is when your stomach's stretch receptors start losing their effectiveness. These receptors are responsible for sending "I'm full" messages to your brain when you're, well, full. But as you overeat, they start to lose their efficacy. This is usually the explanation as to why even if you overeat today, you'll still be ravenous tomorrow.

Quick fix: You may eat the same high calorie foods but cut back on the servings; instead, load up on fruits, vegetables and whole grain-you'll get the same full feeling without the unwanted calories.

3. Stop after your third cocktail: Your body doesn't process liquids in the same way that it does solids; you're not going to feel full even after several eggnogs. That means you're packing on the pound without even noticing it.

Quick fix: Low Calorie beverages like tea (without milk and sugar) can boost the metabolism. If you find that this doesn't hit the spot, make some flavoured water with sliced lemons, oranges and even berries!
