The fans of the famed gaming console have much to celebrate aside from the birthday of their favorite gaming device. The PlayStation 4, which the company dubbed as "the world's most powerful console" is currently enjoying its phenomenal first year. Another reason for fans and gaming enthusiasts to celebrate is Sony's announcement that a limited edition twentieth anniversary PlayStation 4 will be released soon.

The gaming console wrapped up its second decade after it has hit Japanese shelves on 3 December 1994. Looking back, the original PlayStation was built to embody a sense of adventure and discovery as told in a blog by Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president. In addition, the PlayStation sold 100,000 units on its first weekend in the market and has sold one million units in six months.

The original PlayStation was launched in an already established market wherein Nintendo is competing neck and neck with Sega. Sony's original plan was to release a CD-ROM-equipped Super Nintendo called PlayStation, which was then showcased at CES 1991. However, the partnership was called off due to revenue sharing disagreements. Just a few years later, Sony headed by Ken Kutaragi's renegade division regrouped and has re-emerged with a product that gave Nintendo's business a beating, The Verge reports.

The famous console made its U.S. launch in 1995 and it was sold for US$299. In 1997, Sony released the Net Yaroze, which is a programmable version of the PlayStation that enables players to create their own games. Years after, the PSone which is a smaller and cheaper version of the PlayStation was launched in July 2000 and sold a whopping 28 million units. On the other hand, the racing simulation "Gran Turismo" was hailed as the best-selling game for the gaming console and has sold 10 million units, followed by "Final Fantasy VII", "Resident Evil", "Tekken 3", "Tom Raider" and "Crash Bandicoot".

Finally, the limited edition PlayStation 4 will still come in gray variant just like its classic predecessor. According to the Japanese tech giant's blog post, it will only release 12,300 units of the limited anniversary edition of the PS4. Pre-orders will commence on Saturday in a keynote presentation from PlayStation Experience, which is a fan and developer expo held in Las Vegas.
