Photo shows Malia Obama smoking at Lollapalooza
There are just a few months left before the Obamas leave the White House, and the only times that presidential daughter Malia Obama was caught in a controversy was when an NFL posted her photo in tight jeans and when she and sister Sasha rolled their eyes during the 2014 Thanksgiving pardoning the turkey rite. However, photos at July’s Lollapalooza in Chicago which she attended showed the 18-year old smoking.
The website Radar Online claims she was smoking pot. It posted a video of Malia smoking. Complex quotes Jerrdin Selwin, who runs the Radar Online website, as saying he saw her smoking marijuana during the Bryson Tiller set.
"You could smell the marijuana smoke. I saw some young guy hand her a cigarette and she took at least one hit on it. She had it in her hand for about one minute, then gave it back to him.” However, beyond what he saw, the only clear evidence is Malia smoked.
But the elder presidential daughter, whose image smoking has gone viral, may end up getting away with attempts at adulthood rites of passage because her father, US President Barack Obama, admitted his cannabis-smoking past.
“I've told my daughters I think it's a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy... As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life,” Complex quotes the outgoing president.
Moreover, the New York Post points out that marijuana was recently decriminalised in Illinois after state Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law this August. The law removes criminal penalties for people who are in possession of 10 grammes of weed or less.
Although the president and the law are in her favour, social media – which criticised Malia for skipping the Democratic National Convention to attend Lollapalooza – is not. Those who picked on her twerking and flaunting her abs at the biggest music event would likely use the incident to criticise the presidential daughter for what millions of American teens regularly do.
Moreover, it comes at a time that more states and countries are legalizing medicinal cannabis.
