A number of Australian cricketers took to social media to pay tribute to Phillip Hughes, who would have been 27 on his birthday on Monday. Matthew Wade, Michael Clarke, David Warner and Steven Smith all sent their birthday greetings to Hughes.

Clarke, who dedicated Australia’s World Cup victory to Hughes, shared a throwback picture of him with the late teammate on Instagram saying “Happy Birthday bro.” Wade and Warner also took to Instagram to post their birthday greetings while Smith opted to post his greeting on micro-blogging social media platform, Twitter, in honour of Hughes’ 27th birthday.

On Nov. 27, 2014, Hughes was struck on the lower part of his head by a bouncer during a short delivery. The incident took place in a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and NSW held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Hughes was immediately taken to a hospital but died a couple of days later, only three days away from his 26th birthday.

This year marked Hughes’ first death anniversary, which saw the Australian and New Zealand teams pay accolades to the fallen Macksville-native athlete. Both teams wore black arm bands during the third test at the Adelaide Oval.

A video was also played at 4:08 p.m. to honour Hughes’ Test cap number. There was no minute of silence held out of respect for Hughes’ family, who requested to have tributes at a “low-key.”

“ Obviously it's a tough time for his family and his friends and we respect that, hopefully we can have a good week for Phillip," skipper Steve Smith said in an interview as quoted on Australia’s official cricket website. “A year on we still have Hughes at the back of our minds every time we walk out onto the field.”
