UPDATE (June 20, 2016): Josh Logan has confirmed that "Penny Dreadful" Season 3 is the last chapter of the series. There will be no Season 4.

“Penny Dreadful” Season 3, Episodes 8 (“Perpetual Night”) and 9 (“The Blessed Dark”) aired June 19 on Showtime, delivering back-to-back brilliant visual poetry and stellar moments featuring Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Patti LuPone. The big death toward the end suggests a series ending, but there has been no official word from the network or series creator Josh Logan yet.

Fans are wondering whether there would be a “Penny Dreadful” Season 4. Showtime has not announced a return date, and its leading cast member seems to have left for good. Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) dies in Ethan’s (Josh Hartnett) hands, after he made sure her soul is saved with the Lord’s Prayer.

Dracula (Christian Camargo) flees as soon as finding out that his prize is dead (and saved by the Wolf of God). Eva Green and Josh Hartnett’s final moments are emotionally gripping, even as they are have always been captivating together on the drama.

In other events in the third season finale, The Creature a.k.a. Caliban a.k.a. John Clare (Rory Kinnear) decides his son should not suffer the ordeal of an immortal life. His wife disagrees, but she really has no idea about the weight of an immortal’s curse.

Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and Ethan are now family, bonded by love for Vanessa, who sacrificed her life for them and supposedly for the world.

‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 4 – will Showtime and John Logan deliver?

Evan as Vanessa is gone, “Penny Dreadful” Season 4 could still happen. Eva Green will be sorely missed should the show keep her dead. There are still more stories, though. The show has an amazing cast ensemble, which includes the fantastic Patti LuPone.

Seeing “The End” at the third season finale made fans anxious. Did Showtime present the viewers with a series ending instead of the end of a chapter? Or, does the title card merely imply the end of a three-season arc about Miss Vanessa Ives?
