Australian Actor Hugh Jackman is reportedly being eyed to play the villainous Blackbeard in Joe Wright’s film, “Pan.” Starring a sole superhero in seven series of the “X Men” franchise, one may be wondering why Wright would tap the top Aussie hunk to play the character.

Blackbeard, according to Variety, is the character in Peter Pan origin story who "serves as Pan’s close ally before turning bad."

Blackbeard's character will head the pirates who will work up against Captain Hook. He is closely associated with Pan as his best friend before he jumped fences with the “evils.”

Entertainment.ie noted that Jackman is the best to take on the job after leading in many films in recent years as the good guy and seeing him on the other side will be a welcome change.

Entertainment.ie: “We're probably more used to seeing Hugh Jackman play the hero, but to portray a villain as cool as Peter Pan's Blackbeard would be a nice change of gear for the man we can probably all admit to being sick to death of seeing in his Wolverine claws. And he's not done yet, he's still got X-Men: Days of Future Past to go.”

The script will be written by Jason Fuchs. The film will be directed by Joe Wright, the man behind costume drama films such as “The Atonement,” and “Pride and Prejudice.” Wright will be collaborating with Fuchs in a storyline that looks into the original villain, Blackbeard, who came to life before Captain Hook.

Fuchs will develop the story plot with Blackbeard at the center before Captain Hook betrayed Pan. Pan is a close friend of Blackbeard in the version of the film, according to Cinemablend.

Cinemablend also noted this is the first casting call in Wright’s “Pan,” but it is believed that the studio which won the rights on the project will be opening a casting call anytime soon.

Rumors have it that Warner Brothers wanted a new name for the “titular role.” The study is reportedly considering on having a big name, with Ryan Gosling on top of the list to play Captain Hook. The studio is eyeing sequels with Gosling as the villainous traitor to Pan.

Jackman is currently working on his next project, Neill Blomkamp's “Chappie.” The Aussie hunk is also set to appear in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” set to hit theaters next Memorial Day.
