Pakistan’s popular social media icon Qandeel Baloch, whose posts have provoked the conservative Muslim’s culture and practice in their conservative country, has been killed by her brother in what has been suspected as an honour killing.

The 26-year-old model, who was born Fauzia Azeem, was strangled while asleep near the city of Multan, Sultan Azam, according to a report by The Australian. This was confirmed by the city’s senior police officer. The murder happened during a trip to the Muzzafarabad village in central Punjabi where she and her family celebrated the Eid al-fitr.

Qandeel Baloch rose to popularity amongst Pakistan’s youth through social media posts that broke the barriers in her very orthodox Muslim country. This conduct, however, has provoked a lot of typical conservatives who were never pleased by her ideologies, her own brother included.

Her social media antics included vowing to strip if Pakistan’s national cricket team would beat their long time rival India and gyrating in a titillating manner to Urdu music. She has been receiving a lot of backlash and death threats for such bold posts. While some of her beliefs pushed conservative Muslim ideologies to the wall, Baloch continued to stand up for her liberality.

Upon his capture, her brother and alleged murderer Muhammad Waseem admitted without restraints that he indeed killed his sister. He says that he gave his sister a tablet to subdue her then strangled her. Then, in an open conference held with the police, he says that he does not have any regrets in killing his sister because she was bringing "dishonour to the Baloch name," writes NDTV.

The murder of the well loved figure sent the whole country in grief and triggered an outpour for cries of justice and for the upholding of her ideologies on social media.

In Pakistan, more than 500 people die each year from honour killings, majority of the victims being women. Honour killings have been happening in conservative Pakistan for quite some time and are carried out by family members in an attempt to rid their family of the shame brought by another member.
