What was the best highlight during the Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri? In what will go down as one of the downright funniest and serendipitously ironic moments in boxing history, Algieri’s trainer, Tim Lane completely embarrassed himself on air by declaring that his ward will put Pacquiao to sleep anytime soon but saw the previously undefeated American fighter kiss the canvas instead.

In the in-fight interview, Kellerman queried Lane of their game plan against Pacquiao late in the match. The outspoken Lane, who has had verbal back-and-forth with Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach leading up to the fight, did not hold back on his prediction.

“Let me tell you what. He’s [Algieri] going to put him [Pacquiao] to sleep in a few minutes. I’m [going to] let him go in one more round. I still got him in a cage right now,” Lane boldly stated while the fight was on-going.

“I’m going to let him lose in round 10 or…”

And before Lane could even finish his sentence the opposite happened; Pacquiao knocked down Algieri for the nth time in the bout sending Lane to an embarrassed silence even as the crowd went into a wild frenzy.

Pacquiao dominated Algieri and the scorecards as the judges gave the Filipino the 119-103, 119-103, 120-102 unanimous decision victory. Pacquiao retained the World Boxing Organization (WBO) World welterweight title and notched his third straight victory after falling to Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico in December 2012.

Algieri was also criticised by boxing pundits and fans for failing to give Manny Pacquiao a proper challenge with observers saying that the American settled for just surviving for 12 rounds rather than indulge the Filipino in a real fight.

In his official website, Algieri’s trainer has a nickname for himself, Tim “Bring the Pain” Lane. On this night, he saw Manny Pacquiao bring the pain to Algieri. The Algieri camp has yet to comment on the embarrassing episode involving Lane’s in-fight prediction. Or if Lane will ever allow himself to be interviewed during a bout again in the their next fights.
