Sam Heughan has read “Voyager” by Diana Gabaldon and has attempted a physical transformation for “Outlander” Season 3. There will be different timelines featured in the next year, so the audience will see an evolution of the personality of the character after the events of the second season.

[Spoiler alert]

While interacting with the fans after reaching the milestone of 300k followers on Twitter, Heughan (Jamie Fraser) said that he tried to lose weight for his role in the next season. The actor explained that his character “changes a lot” as the story progresses.

The changes, however, are more pronounced in his mind rather than the body, Heughan told Popsugar recently. When he went into battle towards the end of the second season Jamie’s plan was to die there. But, after he survives he has to once again fight to find purpose in his life. So, his ageing process was not about getting a walking stick or grey hair, Heughan explained, it is about how his experiences have changed him mentally.

“Outlander” Season 3 will be a journey for Heughan’s character to get back to being the Jamie Fraser that the fans have come to love. The changes in the character are so much that there are times when the audience will not be able to recognize him because of the way he acts.

One reason for his state of mind is the fact that he has to live on thinking that Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is dead. He does not know that she is still living, and eager to get back together. As time has passed they are now different people, but Heughan teased that there will still be bits of what attracted them to each other in the first place.

Filming of “Outlander” Season 3 is currently ongoing. Heughan revealed that the cast and crew will be getting two weeks off during Christmas.
