The legal battle between the camp of Oscar Pistorius and that of Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot and killed on Valentine's Day 2013, has gotten one step closer to a final conclusion with a judge finding Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide. Pistorius could face possible jail time of 15 years on said charges. The final sentencing will follow in two weeks' time.

The Paralympic Athlete has been charged with the murder of his model girlfriend after having shot her four times and killing her while she was in the bathroom at his home in Pretoria, South Africa on Feb. 14, 2014. The trial started six months ago and after a lengthy process, the verdict was given over two days starting Thursday, Sept. 11 and ending today, Sept. 12, 2014.

As of yesterday, Pistorius was found not guilty of pre-meditated murder, with Judge Thokozile Masipa saying that Pistorius did not intend to kill Steenkamp. The judge believed Pistorius' claim that he did in fact shoot into his bathroom but it was not with an intention to kill his girlfriend but was in fact afraid that there was an intruder in the house. Pistorius had, from the beginning, admitted to shooting his girlfriend but maintained that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that it was an intruder inside his bathroom.

Masipa also stated that the prosecution was unable to prove that Pistorius had killed Steenkamp in rage following an argument between the couple. She also dismissed WhatsApp messages between the couple which have been presented as evidence with Steenkamp stating that she was afraid of her boyfriend in the chat. Testimonies from neighbours who claimed to have heard the shots and screams on the night of the incident also proved inconclusive, according to the judge who stated that the timelines created by human perception were unreliable.

Despite having been ruled not guilty for premeditated murder, the judge still ruled that Pistorius is guilty of culpable homicide which, in South African legal terms means that he unintentional but nonetheless unlawfully killed a person. The conviction for culpable homicide could see Pistorius land in jail for a maximum sentence of 15 years.

The final sentencing will follow within approximately two weeks after more legal procedures. Apart from the killing, Pistorius also received the verdict for three other gun-related charges. He was found guilty for recklessly firing a gun inside a restaurant in 2012 but was acquitted of doing the same from the sunroof of a car last year. He was also found not guilty of illegal possession of ammunition in his home which was found when his house was searched after the Steenkamp incident.
