A shot has been fired in Litchfield Penitentiary. Netflix has dropped the first minute of “Orange Is the New Black” season 5, and it is going to be chaos.

The comedy-drama series ended its season 4 finale with an intense cliffhanger. Daya (Dascha Polanco) was last seen pointing a gun at the head of correctional officer Humphrey (Michael Torpey). Her fellow inmates were urging her to pull the trigger.

The latest OITNB trailer shows the last scenes of season 4, with Daya still pointing the gun at Humprey. Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Alex (Laura Prepon), on the other hand, had decided to flee the riot. The two mutually agreed not to involve themselves in trouble before they walked into the scene.

“If this is a real riot, do you think this is a step forward or backwards for equality?” Piper asked Alex. “I don’t care, and we’re getting out of here now,” Alex replied before pulling Piper away.

It looks like Alex would want to stay away from trouble since she has another on her plate. In the finale, Piper found out that Alex had been leaving notes around the prison, revealing the real name of the guard she killed.

A riot had sparked inside the penitentiary after the tragic death of Poussey (Samira Wiley). Prison guard Bayley (Alan Aisenberg) accidentally suffocated Poussey, which caused her death. Taystee (Danielle Brooks) then discovered that Joe Caputo (Nick Sandow) has no plans to punish Bayley. She thus incited the protest of the prisoners in Litchfield.

While the inmates cheer for Daya to shoot Humprey, the clip fades to black and a gunshot is heard. It is unclear whether Daya pulled the trigger or whether someone else fired a gun.

Brooks previously teased that there will be “war” in the prison when the show returns for its fifth season. “Taystee has nothing to lose, she’s lost everything that she cared so deeply about. It’s time to fight,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, Netflix has released several photos of “Orange Is the New Black” season 5. One of the photos shows Alex and Piper on the floor in what could be a lockdown. In another photo, Taystee and her crew are crowding around an iPad. Meanwhile, Uzo Aduba (Crazy Eyes) shared on Twitter a photo of her character and ex-girlfriend Dandelion (Emily Althaus) in an infirmary.

The fifth season of the Emmy-winning series consists of 13 episodes. The events will reportedly run over the course of three days.

“Orange Is the New Black” season 5 will start streaming on Netflix on June 9 in the U.S. Australian fans can catch the season 5 premiere on June 10 via Netflix Australia and Foxtel's Showcase channel.
