Almost 261,000 Victorian homes are a potential fire risk, a new survey shows.

Insurer GIO has released a study showing potentially 261,000 homes in danger a risk that can be easily reduced by undertaking a few simple precautions.

GIO spokesperson, Duncan Bone said, “Our latest research has revealed that one in every six households believe their home is a fire risk.”

“Now is the perfect time to do a proper spring clean and kick off any of those bigger home maintenance jobs that have been hanging around or cropped up in the past few months,” Mr Bone said.

The new survey comes only a few days after new building regulations showed more than 84 per cent of Victoria is feared to be at risk of bushfires.

Herald Sun during the weekend reported a two-year assessment of the state's fire risks after Black Saturday has found that only metropolitan Melbourne, sections of northwestern Victoria and isolated pockets of Gippsland and northern Victoria are free of the threat of bushfire.
