Yet another dog treat has been recalled over associated health risks. Nylabone, a popular dog chew and toy maker, has issued a recall notice for its puppy chews over the Salmonella poisoning that the product poses to humans and puppies.

Nylabone has decided to recall its “Puppy Starter Kit” dog chews. The plastic-sealed kit contained three chewable bones for the dogs. The decision came soon after the product failed to pass the internal routine testing at the New Jersey based company, since Salmonella was reportedly found in some of the manufactured dog chews. The popular Nylabone product was being offered nationwide and in Canada.

The recall—which recently got published as an FDA Press Release—has been put on one lot of the 1.69-ounce Puppy Starter Kit marked with "Lot #21935, UPC 0-18214-81291-3." The expiry date mentioned on the recalled product is March 22, 2018. According to the company, both pets and humans handling the recalled product are at the risk of Salmonella.

Salmonella can affect animals ingesting the product and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” states the press release.

Salmonella infection most commonly results in vomiting, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, fever, diarrhoea and fatigue. According to the FDA news release, "arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms" can result from Salmonella contamination. The company has advised to contact their physician in case they exhibit any of these signs and symptoms. No incidence of contamination has been reported so far since the recall of the product.

The company further declared that anyone who has purchased the recalled product can get the money reimbursed by returning the dog chews at the place of purchase. In addition, people who need further information can call 1-877-273-7527 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. CT.
