NVIDIA has recently announced the new and powerful mobile processor called Tegra X1, targeting 2015. The currently-available processor from NVIDIA is the Tegra K1 processor seen in several high-end, power-packed devices like Google Nexus 9. It is worth noting that the upcoming Tegra X1 is reportedly the first mobile processor that has the ability to offer 1 teraflop floating point performance. This means, the X1 will be in the same league as the desktop GPUs and the latest gaming consoles.

Apparently, the NVIDIA Tegra X1 will come with a new octa-core CPU cluster, which combines four Cortex-A57 and additional four Cortex-A53 cores, along with custom CPU interconnect and cluster migration. When it comes to the Graphical Processing Unit, NVIDIA has utilised the latest Maxwell architecture, seen in their flagship desktop GPU called GTX 980. In comparison, the 256 CUDA core GPU housed in the Tegra X1 is reportedly twice as powerful as the Kepler GPU seen in the Tegra K1. Comparing the same in the gaming consoles world, the Microsoft Xbox One is capable of 1.3 teraflop, whereas the Sony PS4 can provide up to 1.84 teraflop, notes GSM Arena.

Meanwhile, in addition to the mobile processing unit, NVIDIA is reportedly gearing up to release applications for automobiles as well. It is worth noting that, the company recently announced NVIDIA DRIVE car computers. Also, NVIDIA will be using the DRIVE PX computing platform for autopilot applications. Here, two Tegra X1 processors will reportedly receive input from 12 onboard cameras surrounding the car to support the Surround Vision feature. Notably, the Surround Vision feature allows the user to get 360 degrees view outside of the car, straight from the car's screen/monitor. The same can also help with Auto-Valet feature for automatic parking. The infotainment part, on the other hand, will be taken care by DRIVE CX. This includes audio system, navigation, digital instrument clusters, HVAC and driver monitoring, among others.

As far the as upcoming Tegra X1-clad smartphones and tablets are concerned, the devices are expected to hit the store shelves in the first half of 2015, alongside DRIVE PX powered automobiles-based features. The DRIVE CX, on the other hand, will be released in the second half of 2015, says GSM Arena.
