Finnish cellphone giant Nokia is the latest player in today's smartphones battle royale, bringing in two contenders, the Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710.

While Nokia continues to be the world's top seller of mobile phones, the market for high-end phones (smartphones) is dominated by Apple, and Android device makers like Samsung, Motorola, and HTC.

The high-end Nokia Lumia 800, as well as the Lumia 710, will be available in the European market next month and will ship to the U.S. early next year. The Lumia 710 is set to sail to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before Christmas.

These new smartphones from Nokia will be the first and real Windows phones to sport the Windows Phone 7 platform and hopes to kick start a successful onslaught of future windows phones. Nokia has a tiny share in the Australian smartphone market, which is dominated by Apple's iPhone.

The Lumia 800's design is quite similar to the MeeGo -based Nokia N9 - the first and last MeeGo phone and the handset that never set foot in the U.S. The Lumia 800 sports a 3.7-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display with 800x480 resolution.

The new smartphone is packing a single-core 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512 MB RAM, 16GB onboard storage, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity, micro-USB port, 8-megapixel camera with a f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens and 720p video capture at 30 frames-per-second. Nokia claims the handset has up to 9.5 hours of talk time and up to 55 hours of music playback. The 800 weighs about 5 ounces and comes in Black, Cyan and Magenta.

The two smartphones are running on Mango, which is the latest Phone 7 release, which includes features such as multitasking, an improved Web browser and a Wi-Fi hotspot mode. Nokia also packed in a bunch of extras such as Nokia Drive, a free turn-by-turn directions app for more than 100 countries, Nokia Music store with MixRadio streaming, and an ESPN sports hub exclusive to Nokia Windows Phones that lets you follow news, stats, scores from your favorite sports teams.

The two almost have similar specs. However, Lumia 710 is equipped with 5-mgapixel camera and a weaker battery capable of 7 hours of talk time and 38 hours of playback. Lumia 710 is available in various colors such as black, white, cyan, fuchsia, and yellow and black or white on the front.

Nokia Lumia 800 is set to cost $580 and the Lumia 710 is about $375.
