They even sand and danced to the performance by Fifth Harmony, a girl band, after the tree was lit. This contrasts to their refusal even to pet the pardoned turkey during last week's Thanksgiving rite in the White House.

First Lady Michelle Obama read an excerpt from The Night Before Christmas, while actor Tom Hanks was emcee of the programme. Other performers before an audience of 17,000 were R&B singer Ne-Y, country star Chely Wright and Patti Labelle.

It appears that the unsolicited advice of GOP staffer Elizabeth Lauten did have some effect on the Obama girls who were just acting like typical teens. However, what did the former communications director of Republican congressman was her use of strong words such as "without class" and "dressed like going to the bar."

As a result of the political storm that came out from Lauten's Facebook newsfeed, not only did she resign out of shame, but records of her past wild days also surfaced in social media, particularly shoplifting and overspeeding.

The incident also highlighted the difficult position of the first daughters who are constantly in the public eye that even a simple situation such as Malia wearing tight jeans is now a viral photo.
