A month before the world’s first self-tying shoes hit retail stores, Nike has launched a lottery to give sneaker fans the chance to purchase HyperAdapt 1.0 shoes for only US$10 (AU$13).

The American sporting goods company is giving away 89 pairs of limited-edition version of the high-cut Nike Mag sneakers for those who will be picked on the lottery. Interested parties can enter the lottery by purchasing a ticket worth US$10 (AU$13) from Oct. 4 to Oct. 11.

According to Heidi Burget, public relations director at Nike, proceeds of the lottery ticket sales will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a non-profit organization named after the lead star of the 1989 film “Back to the Future.”

In the sci-fi movie, Fox’s character wore a power-lacing Nike sneakers, which inspired the design and technology behind the HyperAdapt 1.0 shoes, particularly the high-cut Nike Mag model. Purchase of the shoes will begin in select Nike Stores in the US on Nov. 28.

In 2011, Nike and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research have raised US$10 million (AU$13 million) when the first batch of Nike Mag shoes were auctioned off within only 10 days.

“Though it initially shared only a few seconds of screen time with Michael, the idea behind the Nike Mag unlocked something much bigger at Nike,” said Mark Parker, Chairman, President and CEO, NIKE, Inc. in a statement.

“It sent us down an uncharted path of innovation, but it also opened our eyes to our ability to fight some of the world’s biggest challenges. We feel privileged for the opportunity to raise even more awareness for the fight against Parkinson’s.”

A game-changer in the footwear industry, Nike’s HyperAdapt 1.0 is equipped with an “Adaptive Fit” technology, which senses the wearer and adjusts the fit accordingly.

Nike unveiled the HyperAdapt 1.0 in March during the Nike Innovation 2016 event in New York City. In September, the company announced the adaptive lacing shoes will be available in three colour variants at select Nike Stores on Cyber Monday.
