The Houston Texans have signed Whitney Mercilus to a four-year, $26 million extension with $10.5 million guaranteed for the 24 year old linebacker in one of the latest transactions in the National Football League, or NFL. Ian Rapoport, NFL Media Insider, was one of the first who reported the deal and the Texans official Twitter account confirmed the signing on Tuesday.

Mercilus, who was the first round pick by the Texans in the 2012 NFL Draft, has 18 sacks in three seasons plus credited 122 tackles. His total sacks is fifth highest in the franchise history. Mercilus was highly touted out of college for the University of Illinois where he was named as an All-American team member and All-Big Ten first team in 2011. In the 2014 NFL Season, Mercilus had 50 tackles, 5.0 sacks, 11 quarterback hits, nine tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in 15 games, 13 of which he started.

Mercilus was appreciative of the contract extension sharing his thoughts on social media.
