Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson lost two fingers in a Fourth of July fireworks accident in North Carolina. The 25-year-old was reportedly at his parents’ house when the accident happened. The Bucs released a statement on Wednesday about Wilson’s injury, but was unclear if the team was aware of its severity according to reports of NJ.com.

"We are aware that C.J. was involved in an accident that occurred over the July 4th holiday. It is our understanding that the injury occurred to one of his hands and our primary concern at this moment is for his long-term health. We have been in contact with C.J. and are continuing to monitor the situation,” the Buccaneers said in the statement.

Tampa Tribune’s Roy Cummings reported that Wilson suffered a severe hand injury describing it as extremely serious. Wilson’s agent Joel Turner confirmed that the cornerback’s camp has been in constant contact with the Bucs about Wilson’s medical issue and are taking the “lead on any information to the public regarding his condition or anything foot-ball related.”

“With federal law on releasing medical information, etc., we are deferring any media issues to the Tampa Bay medical staff/front office,” Turner told ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio as per CBSsports.com.

Wilson was not the only one who suffered the same mishap on the Fourth of July holiday. New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul also sustained a hand injury after yet another July 4 weekend fireworks accident.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated on Wednesday after the misfortune, but the leakage of JPP’s medical condition has sparked a debate of a possible violation of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act as per Yahoo Sports.

Pierre-Paul was set to make $14.8 million on a one-year deal, but has yet to sign the offer from Giants, who also withdrawn a $60 million long-term offer to the 26-year-old defensive end. Meanwhile, Wilson, who only played two games for the Bucs last season after spending a season with the Bears, may not have lost millions of dollars after the accident, but the injury could cost him a chance to play in the NFL next season.
