Barcelona forward Neymar has been reportedly leaning for fresh terms with the Catalan club, but his father insisted that the Brazilian football sensation does not need a contract extension. At least not yet.

Barcelona’s technical director Robert Fernandez confirmed that Neymar and Rafinha are getting close to agreeing new contracts with the Spanish club. "They're on track. They're very important players who will be at Barcelona for many years,” Fernandez said, reports Goal.

The move was suggested to be a preemptive strike to prevent Neymar from leaving Camp Nou after he was linked to Manchester United during this summer’s transfer window, although Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu described the reports as “just rumours.”

However, Neymar Sr., who notoriously pinched €40 million (AU$63.4 million) of the €57 million (AU$90.4 million) purse that Barcelona paid to purchase his son in 2013, shot down talks of new deals.

“Neymar is going to spend a lot more time at Barca,” Neymar Sr. said, reports Sport-English. “We don’t need to reach an agreement for a new contract with the club because we have three years left.”

Neymar has scored only once in three appearances for Barcelona in the ongoing season due to mumps, which he suffered in the early weeks of Barca’s new campaign. He helped the Barcelona to a treble last year, winning the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey to the tune of 39 goals in 51 games.

Meanwhile, Rafhina, who is also in talks for a new contract with Barcelona, will miss most of the club’s games this season after suffering a torn ACL in his right leg, according to Barcelona’s official website. The 22-year-old Rafhina was injured after being tackled from behind by Radja Nainggoln on Thursday’s 1-1 draw against AS Roma.
