Google Nexus 7 2 aka N7 2nd generation is now available in Australia for $439.95 (32 GB) or $389.95 (16GB). How does it compete with the existing Apple iPad mini?

The new Google Nexus 7 2, released end-July, is available in Australia via mobicity.com.au. The same online gadget shopping site offers the iPad mini, released in November 2012. The iPad mini 16 GB price tag shows $429.95, and $549.95 for the 32 GB (prices on mobicity.com.au). There is a $40 difference between the relatively older Apple tablet and the newer (yet cheaper) Google Android tablet.

If you're not deciding based on price alone, you are probably looking into these considerations:

1. CPU and Memory. On paper, Nexus 7's quad-core CPU beats the iPad mini's dual-core. Many analysts, however, won't stop here. The mini's neat design maximises its dual-core effectively, making its CPU a non-issue for many. Check out the specs comparison here:

2. Device-to-Grip Compatibility. Some users find the Nexus 7 2's dimensions more compatible to their grip. Others are more comfortable with iPad mini. For eBook readers who tend to hold their devices longer, the mini wins because of its screen size and lightness.

3. Camera. The old N7 does not have a rear camera, disappointing many photo enthusiasts. The new Nexus 7 2 makes up for this by sporting a 5MP camera. The mini has the same shooting power. For some reviewers, the mini is better outdoors in bright daylight.

4. Operating System. The Nexus 7 2 will be among the first gadgets to run on Android 5 Key Lime Pie. Android fans think of this as a huge factor to consider. Some users, however, don't pay much attention to the latest OS, as long as the system is intuitive and the programs run smoothly.

5. Battery Life. The iPad mini is quite difficult to beat in the battery life category. Its hardware and lower screen resolution make it easier for the device to conserve battery. The Nexus 7 2 is a good buy, but those who are always on the move might be better off with the mini.

Will Apple iOS users switch to Android for the new small Nexus tablet? Mobicity is also accepting pre-orders for Google Nexus 7 II (2nd generation) WiFi + HiddenRadio Speaker (16 GB and 32GB).
