Lamb

China is the world's largest sheep meat producer with a flock estimated at nearly 140 million in 2011, but output has been declining as farmable land shrinks due to urbanisation. Lamb has traditionally been consumed mainly in China's northeast, but a growing urban middle class in expanding cities wants more protein and has broader tastes. A lamb born with a face as that of an “angry old man” has been a topic of discussion among the terrified villagers in Russia. In the Chirka village of the Russian republic of Dagestan, a lamb reportedly has features that are strikingly similar to that of a human face.

The lamb belongs to a 45-year-old sheep farmer, Blasius Lavrentiev, who got shocked when he saw "the hairy face of an old man" when the lamb was born, reported The Express. The picture of the animal reportedly has similar contour of the face as that of a man, with distinct nose, chin and mouth.

"We had quite a tough winter and when I noticed she was pregnant, I was delighted as it meant I would be able to sell the lambs and start making some money again. Her parents are both normal looking sheep so I have no idea how she ended up looking like this," said the farmer, reported The Irish Mirror.

Dorofei Gavrilov, a veterinarian from the local village, has revealed that the deformity could be because of excess supply of Vitamin A to the lamb's mother during pregnancy.

The proud owner of the lamb from the south-west Russia claimed recently that he was offered 10 times the normal price of the lamb by the prospective buyers, just because of this rare deformity. However, the sheep farmer has refused to sell his precious lamb.

"Whatever has caused it, she’s a little beauty and I definitely won’t be selling her for anyone’s dinner table either as the buyers want her on display. She’ll be staying with us until then," told Lavrentiev.
