New Zealand business opportunities are now available in a report with the title, "Business Opportunities for a Sustainable New Zealand." It has outlined four areas of opportunity—smart transport, social value in business, restoration of food system and circular economy. The report explores opportunities in 65 major business segments.

According to Rachel Brown, CEO of Sustainable Business Network, the report's findings demonstrate the tremendous range and potential of pioneering opportunities in New Zealand. The report is the combined effort of hundreds of individuals and organisations that have worked with SBN in various events, workshops and surveys during 2014. The Sustainable Business Network provides advice and support to help businesses in becoming more sustainable, reports Scoop. Nz news

New Business Models

Brown said, for the sake of sustainable business growth, there is a need for new business as well as commercial models to transform many of the systems such as food, transport, energy and social systems. This is to make them more resilient and equitable. Business has a crucial role to play in doing this through new solutions and collaborations.

Some of the opportunities SBN has identified and is working on include:

  • Electric Vehicles: Many businesses are considering the conversion of their corporate fleet to electric vehicles. There are benefits of the new electric vehicles in terms of fuel savings.
  • Procurement: Since an organisation's purchasing choice have an immediate impact on the community around them, the procurement policies can pay focus on maximising economic value. This offers a major opportunity for corporates and councils to go for locally made products which has relevance to the organisation's goals.
  • ICT and Food Apps: To connect with consumers and suppliers, each party should know what is desired from a health and environmental perspective. The ICT helps to improve transparency about food by tracing products from gate to plate.

The CEO said SBN will work with businesses across the country to unlock the potential of additional opportunities. Based on the report's findings, SBN will be ready to work progressive businesses in following areas.

  • Procurement
  • Investment
  • Culture change
  • Employee engagement
  • Community footprinting
  • Biodiesel
  • Reducing food waste
  • National cycling infrastructure
  • Strengthening local food systems

The organisation also honours pioneering entrepreneurs with its NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards, every year.
