The Australian stock market has indefinitely been derailed by its new system, prompting officers to close the market earlier today.

ASX spokesman Matthew Gibbs said technicians are now working on the problem, although he could not confirm if trading will resume by 10am tomorrow, Wednesday.

The ASX system froze at about 2:48 PM as complaints of trade confirmations were failed to be sent.

''Before 10am, we'll know whether trading will resume,'' he said.

According to the system status statement posted on the ASX website, the initial problem surfaced at 2.18pm.

The ASX200 share index last traded at 4830 points down 6 points or 0.1 percent for the day. Meantime, the All Ordinaries ended the day down 2.3 points at 4922.6.
