The How I Met Your Mother actor and four-time Tony Award host is gearing up for his return to Broadway for the 2014 premiere of the cult musical Hedwig And The Angry Inch.

Harris is no stranger to Broadway. He has been a part of numerous successful Broadway productions such as Rent, Cabaret and Assasins. John Cameron Mitchell, who wrote, directed and starred in the original Hedwig off-Broadway run and film adaptation, stated, "Who better to pass the wig to but the finest entertainer of his generation?" Eventually, the role was passed to the former Doogie Howser, M.D. star.

Harris has been very vocal about expressing his joy to finally step into the role of Hedwig, the transgender vocalist of the fictional rock and roll band the Angry Inch. "I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig's heels. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the journey."

However, there has been disagreements and unfavourable reactions in the online community about Harris stepping into the role. Hedwig and the Angry Inch as an off-Broadway production had its roots playing at venues where the punk-drag scene was present. The show transformed into a rock show/ cabaret performance. Whether Harris, with his charisma and ability to engage the audience, can pull off a Hedwig performance that is appropriate for Broadway is the big question.

The producers firmly believe in Harris' talent and star power so it's no wonder that he was chosen to lead the Broadway premiere of Hedwig And The Angry Inch in 2014.

"I'm so excited that everything has come into place to bring HEDWIG to Broadway. I have always felt that John and Stephen's musical is a masterpiece and deserved to be seen by wider audiences. Neil Patrick Harris is a consummate stage performer who knows how to rock - there is no one better to play the role of Hedwig on Broadway," producer David Binder said.

The Hedwig And The Angry Inchbegan in 1998 and was named by TIME as the Top Musical in that same year. Mitchell also directed its film adaptation in 2001 where he received the Best Director and Audience Awards at Sundance.

It's Broadway premiere will be in the spring of 2014. Tony winner Michael Mayer will be directing the production. Other cast members, creative team members and further details will be confirmed at a later date.
