The Minnesota Timberwolves are trying to engage the Cleveland Cavaliers in a discussion surrounding defensive-stopper Iman Shumpert ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline, per reports. Both Cavaliers and Timberwolves are expected to remain extremely active closer to Thursday's cut-off period.

According to Sam Amico of AmicoHoops, the Timberwolves have "strong interest" in Shumpert and would try to make a move for the wing ahead of Thursday. While the Cavaliers haven't hinted the possibility of trading Shumpert, they are reportedly in the market for a backup point guard and could potentially acquire Ricky Rubio if the teams can come to an agreement.

With J.R. Smith out with a thumb injury, 26-year-old Shumpert is shooting a career-high 40.3 percent from deep for his 7.8 points and 2.8 rebounds from 25.4 minutes off the bench. During last year's NBA Finals, Shumpert played a key role as a perimeter defender as the Cavaliers romped to a historic title win. Despite Shumpert's value, the recent acquisition of Kyle Korver could propel the Cavaliers front office to let go off the defensive ace, especially if the Timberwolves make a noteworthy offer.

NBA Trade Deadline: Cavs listening to offers for Iman Shumpert

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the "Cavs are listening to offers for Iman Shumpert, even though Moving Shump (Shumpert) (is) not likely". Last year, Hoops Hype reported a possible Shumpert-for-Rubio deal that was reportedly jinxed by the Cavaliers. “Ricky Rubio would be the perfect complement to Irving and fit for the Cavaliers. With Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn as the future at point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rubio is likely an available asset. Rubio would finally have a chance to play for a championship if he were traded to the Cavs," Jamyson Frierson reported.

The Cavaliers would significantly bolster their bench with the addition of Rubio, who can hold his own as a perimeter defence. Also, LeBron James has been clamouring for a third ball-handler behind himself and Kyrie Irving, a role that Rubio could fill almost seamlessly. Will the Cavaliers pull off a Ricky Rubio trade? What would the Timberwolves be willing to overpay for an Iman Shumpert trade? Stay tuned for the latest news and updates ahead of Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline.
