After an impressive debut in his first-ever playoff appearance, Anthony Davis is set to receive a huge and lucrative contract extension offer from the New Orleans Pelicans. Marc Stein of ESPN.com is reporting that the Pelicans are prepared to give the star big man a maximum five-year deal that could reach upwards of $140 million depending on the final salary cap figures for the 2015-2016 NBA Season.

The Pelicans and Davis have the window from July 1 to October 31, 2015 to discuss and finalise the potential long-term deal. If they cannot agree on one, the Pelicans will pay him just over $7M for the 2015-2016 but Davis will hit the open market as a restricted free agent, or RFA, after the 2016 season, as per contract figures via www.spotrac.com.

As a RFA, the Pelicans will have the right to match any offer from other teams but with a superstar like Davis, most teams want to lockdown franchise players early. Davis is just 22-years-old and just finished his third season in the league.

Davis will most likely get an offer of $30 million per year from the Pelicans to make him one of the highest players in the league. Davis’ recent stats in the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs are more than enough to justify the large offer.

Despite getting swept by the Golden State Warriors, Davis still came away impressive after averaging 31.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 3.0 blocked shots per game. He also shot an efficient 54.0 per cent from the floor while playing 42.8 minutes per game in all four games.

While the Pelicans can offer the most money for Davis, their roster situation will come into play when their superstar makes a decision if he wants to stay in New Orleans or move to another team with a legit chance of winning an NBA championship. Under contract for the Pelicans in 2015-2016 are Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday, Ryan Anderson and Quincy Pondexter.
