The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Golden State Warriors, 108-95 on Tuesday night to end the Warriors’ winning streak at 16 games. The Grizzlies trio of Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Mike Conley took care of the offence for Memphis while their dreaded defence limited the Warriors in key parts of the game.

Gasol had 24 points and 7 rebounds, Randolph had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds while Conley had 17 markers and 3 steals for the Grizzlies, which improved to 20-4 for the season while ending the Warriors’ franchise record of 16 straight wins. Golden State dropped to 21-3 but still has the best win-loss mark in the entire league.

The Warriors led 30-24 after the first quarter and was led for the game by Klay Thompson’s 22 points on 8-of-16 field goal shooting. His shooting partner, Stephen Curry had 19 points but missed 16-of-25 shots from the field. The star point guard added 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for Golden State, which shot just 41.1 per cent as a team. The Warriors were playing without starting centre Andrew Bogut still managed to out hustle the Grizzlies on the offensive glass, 15-10 led by Draymond Green and Mareese Speights, who had 3 and 5 offensive rebounds, respectively.

Trailing in the first, Memphis bounced back in the second with a 33-19 run in the quarter with help from bench players Vince Carter (16 points) and John Leuer (11 points). The Grizzlies never let up after the break and pushed the advantage to 11 points, 80-69 at the end of the third quarter and never looked back. The Warriors made a run cutting the lead to just 3 points with 25 seconds to go but they were out of time and Memphis ran away with the victory. The Grizzlies and Warriors meet again twice in the regular season.
