The Los Angeles Lakers have been trying to make a big splash in this summer’s free agency, hoping to build a roster that will get the team back in playoff contention. However, LA was not able to catch any big fish in this year’s free agent market and instead opted to unexpected signings of Lou Williams, Roy Hibbert and Brandon Bass. Despite the recent signings the Lakers have made, the team is still reportedly looking for another piece that will complete its 15-man roster.

According to Fox Sports, Los Angeles, along with the Dallas Mavericks, are the frontrunners to acquire free agent centre Javale McGee. Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insider reports that several teams have expressed interest at the enigmatic centre. However, the Lakers and Mavs are the favourites to land the service of McGee.

McGee was traded from the Denver Nuggets to the Philadelphia 76ers in March, before being waived. The 27-year-old big man only played six games with the Sixers, and averaged three points and 2.2 rebounds per game last season.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles have also expressed interest in acquiring Mario Chalmers from the Miami Heat. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Chalmers, who was the core one of Miami’s core players in its championship season in 2012 and 2013, is being released to reduce the team’s tax bill and get rid of his huge contract.

Franchise Herald reports that several teams including the Lakers are interested in the seven-year veteran. Los Angeles could use Chalmers as a mentor for both Clarkson and Russell, while providing backup minutes in the point guard position.

Chalmers had consistent playing time with the Heat last season. The 29-year-old guard has an average of 10.2 points and 3.8 assists per game last season.
