“My Kitchen Rules” Australia posted a sneak peek of the Feb. 21 episode on its Facebook page. In the clip, Josh makes a snide comment against his team’s opponent. “As long as there’s no cheating today, it should be fair play,” the contestant dubbed “Seafood King” says. When judge Pete Evans asks him to clarify what he means, Josh cites Alyse and Matt’s decision in a previous episode to use curry paste straight from a jar. Josh’s wife, Amy, on the other hand, zeroes in on her female contender. “I just want to wipe that smug look off Elise’s face,” she tells him, earning gasps from the other contestants.

On Episode 13, Alyse and Matt got heavily criticised for cutting corners in their main course at their “day at the races”-themed restaurant. Instead of making curry paste from scratch, the two opted to use a store-bought one for their beef satay. The newlyweds cited lack of time for their controversial decision, but “MKR” fans know that contestants from previous seasons have done their own curry paste.

Pete expressed his disappointment over Alyse and Matt’s strategy, commenting that the two are “taking a big shortcut.” When the two stuck to their guns and served their mains, Pete schooled them for relying on a readymade curry paste. “This is a cooking competition and we expect you to make basic elements from scratch. We’re looking for cooking from the heart. Not from a jar,” he said.

Alyse and Matt’s most bitter rivals, Josh and Amy, seized the opportunity to lambaste their opponents. “I think it’s cheating and therefore this dish is disqualified,” he chided. “I’m questioning if they’re even good at cooking. He even wanted to give Alyse and Matt a big fat zero, but ended up scoring them 1 out of 10.

“My Kitchen Rules” fans were quick to call out Josh’s harsh comments as hypocritical, citing the fact that he and Amy used canned tomatoes during their cook. On the show’s Facebook page, some followers wrote that “My Kitchen Rules” should be consistent and should give the same treatment to Josh and Amy for also using an ingredient straight from the tin. However, others clarified that using curry paste and canned tomatoes are different – curry paste requires several ingredients and skills to combine, while canned tomatoes is just one element to be used in a sauce.
