Motorola Moto G (3rd gen) starts receiving the Marshmallow update
Motorola started rolling out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the third generation of Moto G in the United States and Canada. Earlier, the company had pushed the same update to the Moto X Play, Moto X Pure Edition, Moto X (2nd gen) and Moto X Style.
First spotted by Android Beat, the over-the-air (OTA) update will be available to the owners of the unlocked and SIM-free variant of the device with a model number XT1540. This indicates that the update will soon be rolled out to the other versions as well.
The update includes all security patches that Google released till Dec. 1. Last July, Motorola launched the Moto G (3rd gen) with the Android v5.1.1 on board.
The update weighs 2GB and carries software version 24.11.25.en.US. The company will automatically provide push notifications to all eligible devices. However, users can also manually check for the update. Go to Settings > About Phone > System Update and confirm.
Once the user gets the notification, it is advisable to get connected through Wi-Fi while downloading and installing the firmware. The update will be rolled out in a staggered manner and will take some time to reach out to all users.
As confirmed by the company, the update will remove pre-installed Motorola apps like Moto Assist and Moto Migrate. The newest version of Google’s Android operating system will include features like Doze mode to substantially extend the battery life, app permissions, Google Now on Tap, Direct Share, Android Pay and simpler volume control. The smartphone features 5.0-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels.
Recently, the company also updated the list of devices worthy of receiving Marshmallow. Motorola included Droid Turbo 2, Droid Maxx 2, 2015 Moto E (2nd Gen) with 4G LTE and Moto X Force. However, Moto E (2nd gen) will be getting the update in select locations including Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia excluding China.
