Google has been rolling out its Android 5.0 Lollipop update slowly. For Moto G users who want to experience the update already, there are several options: OTA and custom ROMs. The second generation Moto G received its OTA already while the first generation still awaits roll out completion.

Google and Motorola have started rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the first generation Moto G handset in India. This is part of the soak test before the actual release according to Android Origin. Moto G first generation users may have to wait quite longer before the official release arrives. Nonetheless, for those who want to try to the update already, switching the device to GPE variant is an option. The Android 5.0.1 update is already available for Play Edition devices. To do this, follow these instructions:

Note: Steps are applicable to Moto G XT1032 or XT1033 editions.

1. Users must have an unlocked bootloader.

2. ADB drivers should be installed in the computer.

3. Perform device backup.

4. Charge phone at least 70% to avoid power interruptions.

5. Download the Lollipop update folder from this link and transfer to the computer.

6. Download the Android 4.4.4 KitKat GPE firmware

7. Boot the phone into bootloader. Connect to the computer.

5. Run the Android 5.0 Lollipop on the device via the Brazilian 5.0 OTA or 'Brazilian 5 to 4.4.4 GPE.BAT' file.

6. Reboot the phone and wait to restart.

7. Download the 5.0.1 Android Lollipop GPE OTA.

8. Reboot to recovery stock mode.

9. Choose 'Install Update via ADB' then run 'sideload lollipop.bat' file.

10. Wait for installation to be complete.
