The next-generation Motorola Moto G 2014 (Gen 2) has just been released with upgraded specs, whereas the Moto E was released in May. Readers who are interested in upgrading their inexpensive Moto E to budget-friendly and well-specced Moto G (2014) should check out this comparison of specification, features and price.

Display, Exterior And Size

The Moto G 2014 features a 5.0-inch IPS LCD display bundled with a screen resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. Meanwhile, the Moto E comes with a relatively inferior 4.3-inch display with 540 x 960 pixels resolution. Also, the pixel densities of the Moto G and the Moto E devices stand at 294 ppi and 256 ppi, respectively.

When it comes to the exterior, the refreshed Moto G handset has not gone through any over-the-top change in terms of outside look, barring the obvious size difference. Motorola has used the same plastic build material along with the same alterable rear shell option on its latest handset. Nevertheless, the build quality has improved when compared to its predecessor Moto G 2013, according to Phone Arena. The Moto E, on the other hand, comes with an extremely rugged build and it is easy on the hands. The rubber-like plastic back provides phenomenal grip. It is worth mentioning that the Moto E comes with a unique waterproof coating on the surface. Even though, this coating cannot be compared to the IP67 certified (water proof) handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2, the smartphone is water repellent and splash proof.

Speaking of size, the thickness and the weight of the Moto E are 0.48-inch and 142 g respectively, while the latest Moto G 2014 is 0.43-inch thick and weighs 149 g.

Hardware, Software And Memory

The Moto G is powered by a quad-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400) Cortex-A7 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz. The Moto E, meanwhile, is powered by a relatively inferior dual-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 200) Cortex-A7 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz. However, both the phones house the same 1 GB of RAM. While the Moto G runs on Android v4.4.4 KitKat OS (upgradable to v5.0 Android L), the Moto E runs on Android v4.4.2 KitKat OS (upgradable to Android v4.4.3 KitKat).

As far as the memory goes, the Moto G comes equipped with 8 GB and 16 GB of internal storage capacities, whereas the Moto E settles for 4 GB. Nevertheless, both the devices support microSD card for expansion up to 32 GB. It is worth mentioning that, Motorola released Moto G 4G LTE variant in the early 2014 with microSD card support and it is priced slightly higher than the original 2013 model.

Camera And Battery

The Moto E houses a 5 MP primary camera without flash, while the latest Moto G sports an improved 8 MP rear-facing camera unit with LED flash. In addition, the Moto G comes with a 2 MP secondary unit, while the inexpensive Moto E does not house a secondary unit. Furthermore, the Moto G is backed by a good Li-Ion 2070 mAh (non-removable) battery, whereas the Moto E comes with a relatively inferior Li-Ion 1980 mAh (non-removable) battery unit.

Misc

1. Similar to other Moto handsets, both Moto G and Moto E feature replaceable back panels via Motorola Moto Maker.

2. Both the devices support micro-SIM. In addition, the Moto E comes as a dual-SIM variant as well.

3. Both the handsets come equipped with Bluetooth v4.0, Wi-Fi and microUSB support. Nevertheless, both the smartphones do not support 4G LTE.

Price

The Moto E (4 GB) can be purchased for AU. Meanwhile, the latest Moto G 2014 (8 GB) with model number XT1068 is priced at AU by the retailer GoodGuys in Australia. Upon placing an order with GoodGuys, the device will be shipped within three to five business days.

Verdict

Motorola found its mojo back with Moto series of smartphones. With Moto G 2014, the company has clearly upped the game by improving the display size, camera, storage expansion and also the latest OS version upgrade confirmation. With budget-friendly price tag and improved specs, the Moto G 2014 is a good value for money.
