It could not be helped at all that there are just some couples who are not meant to last, whether in ordinary lives or much more in Hollywood.

It is just a simple trend in life that there are relationships which are not that strong to stand the test of time. Here we take a look at the most exciting engagements that almost reached the point of exchanging vows but still ended up as 'quits.' Some were even called off just a few months before the actual wedding date.

J.Lo and Ben Affleck. After developing into a romantic relationship while working for the movie 'Gigli,' the two announced that they already have plans of getting married after a short-term relationship. But just right before the weekend of their wedding date, they postponed the entire event and came to a split.

Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland. This may such an old news already but it could serve as interesting trivia for those who did not know that these two A-listers once went steady and even reach a point of tying the knot. It made everyone scratch their heads back then that just three days before their actual wedding date, Julia called off the whole thing. She discovered Sutherland was having an affair with a stripper then which of course the supposed to be groom denied.

Alanis Morissette and Ryan Reynolds. Yes, these two have been together once in 2002 and announced that they are engaged by 2004. But in 2007, their representatives announced that both of them have called off the entire thing. The female rockstar married a rapper instead while Reynolds tied the knot with the alluring Scarlett Johansson.

Lance Artmstrong and Sheryl Crow. This cyclist and musician dated in 2003 and after two years announced their engagement. They did not make it down the aisle since they separated in 2006. From then on, Lance had two kids with girlfriend Anne Hansen while Sheryl adopted a kid and dating another musician and friend Doyle Bramhall II.

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. These two young but promising celebrities fell in love while filming 'The Notebook' but they end up separated by 2007. Later on, in one interview, Gosling still refers to his ex as being one of the greatest loves of his life.
