The long list of dope-using athletes is set to grow longer if the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority finds Essendon Football Club's supplement use last season is indeed illegal.

The use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs, more commonly known as 'doping,' by professional athletes dates back to the late 19th century, when laws regarding the issue were not broad enough to cover advances in medicine.

The issue had since become a global problem and has gained prominence over the years despite the establishment of anti-doping authorities.

Some of the best sports stars in history such as professional baseball right fielder Sammy Sosa, sprinter Ben Johnson, and cyclist Lance Armstrong, have admitted at one point that they have used performance enhancing drugs, stripping them of medals and awards garnered in their athletic career.

To further prove a point, let's take a look back at the most shocking drug-admissions and revelations that led to the Aussie athletes' eventual career downfall.
