“Modern Family” actor Reid Ewing casually confirmed that he is gay while exchanging words with a fan on Twitter.

The exchange happened when the 27-year-old actor complimented another guy’s looks by tweeting, “Saw Eugene Bata on @GMA in the Body Dysmorphia segment connected to my article and I just want to say he is hot af.”

A fan responded, saying “Did you also just out yourself?”

Without confirming it as "coming out," Ewing wrote that he was "never in."

The remark was not a big deal for Ewing, but his fans, who were unaware about his sexuality, were surprised.

Ewing recently made headlines when he wrote an essay for Huffington Post detailing his personal battle with body dysmorphia, a mental illness characterised by a person’s preoccupation with the way he or she looks.

In the piece, he revealed that he had undergone various surgeries as a 19-year-old lad when he arrived in Hollywood. He said that not one of the four doctors who worked on him had mental screenings in place for their patients save for asking whether or not he had a history of falling into depression.

He also revealed that there is a history of eating disorders and cases of obsessive compulsion disorder in his family.

Ewing claimed that his addiction to cosmetic surgery started in 2008 when he decided to go to LA to be an actor, and in 2011, he decided to stop going under the knife due to the isolation, secrecy, depression and self-hate that came with it.

"I think people often choose cosmetic surgery in order to be accepted, but it usually leaves them feeling even more like an outsider. We don't hear enough stories about cosmetic surgery from this perspective," he said.
