In a shocking twist at the coronation of Miss Universe 2015, host Steve Harvey made an incorrect announcement of the winner. Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was announced as the first runner-up in an unfortunate mix-up. Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had to let go of her crown after taking the winner’s walk on stage. Harvey has apologised, sparking reactions from Twitter users.

“I'd like to apologise wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia [and] Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible,” Harvey tweeted soon after the live broadcast of Miss Universe 2015.

“Secondly, I'd like to apologise to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake,” Harvey added. The Miss U host posted three tweets on the matter, all of which got over 100 thousand ‘likes’ and re-tweets in under 30 minutes.

Colombia’s Paulina Vega, Miss Universe 2014, crowned Pia Wurtzbach after the mistake was announced. Wurtzbach is the third Filipina to win the international pageant. Gloria Diaz and Margarita Moran won Miss U in 1969 and 1973, respectively.

For the Question and Answer portion of the pageant, Wurtzbach said she should win the Miss Universe 2015 crown “to show the world – the universe rather – that I am confidently beautiful with a heart.”

Here are some of the public reactions posted on Twitter after Harvey issued an apology. On stage, the “Family Feud” host said: “I will take responsibility for this.”
