Atlas Iron Ltd (ASX:AGO) chief executive David Flanagan said he would not vote for Julia Gillard, whom he labeled a "tax queen" given the government's plan to impose the revised levy.

The company is among several mid-tier miners campaigning against the proposed Mineral Resources Rent Tax through the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC), which says the tax favors the three mining giants BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto Ltd and Xstrata and disadvantages others.

AMEC has recently launched an advertising campaign during the federal election, opposing the MRRT and denied it is politically influenced.

When asked after his address in Melbourne Mining Club on Friday if it was worth throwing out a government on the basis of the proposed tax, Mr Flanagan said, "If a government could come to understand this tax and how damaging it is to the Australian people for generations to come, and they didn't implement it, it wouldn't be an issue".

He said he hasn't "gone into the political realms of telling people how I'm going to vote before."

"But given where we are right now, really, we can't afford to risk having this tax in our country, and that means on that basis, I won't be voting for the current Labor government."
