La Center High in Washington, United States suspended one of its high school senior students for five days for putting up a fake “bomb scare” stunt in asking a classmate to go with him to their prom on Saturday. His brief act caused a fleeting scare among the administrators.

Mark Mansell, the school superintendent, found the student's stunt to be inexcusable and deserves reprimand. But Ibrahim Ahmad, a Middle Easterner, felt his suspension was unfair and accused the school for being a racist in describing his ‘promposal’ a “blatant disrespect.” Ahmad contended that if someone else did what he did, he would not be given the same treatment.

According to Mansell, Ahmad had an idea his actions will not be approved by the principal, yet he pushed through with it. The superintendent also argued he wanted everyone to feel safe “given the way the world is today and school safety.” To him, the incident caused issues “even if one parent or one student was upset about it.”

Ahmad, armed with a fake bomb — which he improvised by using paper tubes connected to wires — which were enclosed inside the pockets of his paintball vest, went to the cafeteria stage at lunchtime and displayed a sign that says: “I kno it’s A little Late, But I’m kinda… THE BOMB! Rilea, Will U Be My Date To Prom?”

The teenager thought that lodging a false “bomb scare” was clever and funny, but the administrators did not find it hilarious. In fact, they had to make certain Ahmad was not making threats and the weapons he sported were not real.

Pressure

Ahmad explained there was pressure in going “all out” in proposing his date to Saturday’s big dance. He elaborated that in today’s ‘promposals,’ the trend is for the students to be creative.

Nevertheless, Ahmad said he did not wear the fake bomb for more than 20 seconds. After asking Rilea Wolfe, his classmate and supposedly his promenade date, and taking a picture, the student said he removed the prop. It was his opinion he did not violate any rules.

Ahmad’s promposal, which was captured on a mobile camera, did not spark scare among the students. A few of the students were seen cheering and laughing. Because he could not attend the dance, he said he will go out on a dinner date with Wolfe, who earlier said yes to his promposal.
