Lumia sales dropped by 73 percent as compared to the previous year, revealed the Q3 2016 quarterly earnings of Microsoft. The tech giant is believed to discontinue its Lumia series and make a fresh start with Surface branded smartphone line-up in early 2017.

Chris Capossela, chief marketing officer for Microsoft, had already confirmed last year that Microsoft is working on a “breakthrough” device running on Windows 10 Mobile. Later, at a podcast interview with Windows Weekly, Capossela again hinted at the development of a Surface branded phone.

Rumours are rife that the Microsoft Surface Phone will be branded as a business phone that will be as powerful as a modern day PC. Here are the four most speculated specs of the upcoming Microsoft Surface Phone:

Different RAM configurations

To reach out to a larger audience, Microsoft is said to release the Surface Phone in three different variants with multiple RAM configurations ranging between 4GB and 6GB.

The three models will be placed at different price points. According to a report in Mobipicker, the high-end premium variant of the purported Surface Phone could be priced as high as US$1099 (AU$1522).

Massive internal storage

A recent report claimed that the internal storage capacity of the Surface phone may be up to a massive 500GB. If rumours are to be believed, this could be a game changer for Microsoft.

The Surface Phone is widely expected to feature a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels.

Microsoft Pen technology

The new Surface Phone will likely to come packed with support for Microsoft Pen technology just like S Pen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. The best feature of Windows 10 Mobile, the Continuum will also likely to make its way to the Surface Phone.

The Continuum will enable the users to connect the smartphone to any PC or monitor and work seamlessly on a large screen, like the Lumia 950.

Powerful processor

Earlier, the Surface Phone was expected to come packed with Intel’s Atom processor. But following a restructuring, the chipmaker is believed to have cancelled the development of the Atom chips for mobile devices.

On the other hand, Microsoft is also rumoured to ship the Surface Phone with Snapdragon 830 processor onboard. The high-end chipset could support up to 8GB of RAM. The new processor will also supposedly help enhance the graphical capabilities of the smartphone.
