Microsoft Lumia 535 has recently been released in November, whereas the widely popular Moto G 2014 was released not too long ago in September. Readers who are interested in the budget-friendly Moto G 2014, or the latest Microsoft Lumia 535, should check out this comparison of the two handsets.

Display, Design And Size

Both smartphones feature the same 5.0-inch IPS LCD display. However, the Lumia 535 comes with a modest resolution of 540 x 960 pixels, whereas the Moto G offers a slightly better resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. Therefore, the pixel densities of Motorola and Microsoft handsets stand at 294 ppi and 220 ppi, respectively.

When it comes to design, the Lumia 535 features a plastic chassis that is synonymous to virtually all the Lumia devices. Moreover, Microsoft is offering six vivid colour options with glossy exteriors. Nonetheless, the over-the-top shiny, plastic appearance may not be preferred by many buyers, as the customers are rooting for the metallic look. But then, on the positive side, the handset provides good friction and it is comfortable on the hands, thanks to the modest 5.0-inch size of the device. On the flipside, the plastic exterior provides a cheap look to the device, according to Forbes.

Meanwhile, the ever-trustable Moto G handset looks like a replica of the 2013 model. However, the size of the smartphones vary with 4.5-inch (2013) and 5.0-inch (2014) displays. Apart from the bigger size, Motorola has utilised the same plastic chassis and the interchangeable back shell option stays intact as well. Also reportedly, the quality of the build material has improved to a significant extent, making the 2014 Moto G model a sought-after replacement for the 2013 device, Phone Arena writes.

Speaking of size, the thickness and weight of the 2014 Moto G and the Lumia 535 are (0.43-inch and 149 g) and (0.35-inch and 146 g), respectively. Evidently, the latest Lumia handset is lighter and thinner than the Motorola handset.

Hardware, Software And Memory

The Moto G is powered by a quad-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 400) Cortex-A7 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz. The Lumia 535, on the other hand, is powered by a relatively inferior quad-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 200) Cortex-A7 processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz. In spite of the difference, both phones are backed by 1 GB of RAM. On the software side, the Moto G runs on Android v4.4.4 KitKat OS (upgradable to v5.0 Lollipop), whereas the Microsoft Lumia 535 runs on Windows Phone 8.1.

As far as the memory goes, both the budget-friendly handsets come equipped with 8 GB of built-in storage. Plus, both the phones support microSD cardm but then the expansion limits of Motorola and Microsoft devices stand at 32 GB and 128 GB, respectively.

Camera And Battery

While the Moto G houses a good 8 MP primary camera with LED flash, the Lumia 535 features a 5 MP unit with LED flash. Additionally, the Lumia device features a surprisingly good 5 MP shooter as the secondary camera for selfies, whereas the Motorola handset sports a 2 MP shooter. Moreover, the camera unit of Moto G supports face detection, panorama and HDR, whereas the Lumia device doesn't. Moving on to the battery specification, the Moto G is backed by a Li-Ion 2,070 mAh unit, while the Lumia 535 houses a Li-Ion 1,905 mAh battery unit.

Misc

1. Speaking of colour, the Lumia handset comes in orange, green, white, black, gray and blue, while the Moto G offers white and black front panel options. As mentioned earlier, the black panel can be customised with the help of Moto Maker site, similar to other Moto devices.

2. Readers should note that aside from the standard connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microUSB port, both the handsets do not support 4G LTE.

Price

The Microsoft Lumia 535 is priced at US$169.99 in Expansys, which roughly translates to AU$199. The Moto G 2014, on the other hand, will set the buyers back by US$179.99 that roughly translates to AU$211.
