Microsoft developers have built a website named ‘How-Old.net’ that guesses user’s age once the photograph is uploaded. How-old.net has been built on top of Microsoft Azure platform and the developers utilized the Face API in the Azure Machine Learning Gallery that can detect and pull out information about faces in the photo, according to reports.

How-Old.net app was unveiled on May 30, at the Microsoft Build conference 2015 and the website allows users to upload a photograph after which it can analyse and reveal the estimated age of an individual, reports PC World.

To develop How-Old.net, the team at Microsoft used the face API alongside the Bing Search API from the Azure marketplace, reports I4U News.

The app has been developed with Microsoft’s Application Program Interfaces that can recognise information about faces in a photograph, reports Tech News Today. Tools that embed search results and location data have been used to facilitate the process of guessing age and gender of a person in the photograph, as per the Tech News Today report.

According to the PC World report, the app uses face detection routines from Microsoft’s Project Oxford, which can identify the face, age and gender of the person in the photograph. The results may not be accurate every time as it varies according to the lighting or facial expression in the photograph, reports PC World.

Users have reported that the website guesses their age and gender wrong, reports Tech Times. Microsoft might improve the website as it working towards developing its facial recognition capabilities. By using all the data that the company is getting from this service, Microsoft will figure out ways that will improve facial recognition capabilities, as per Tech Times.

The app was an unexpected development by Microsoft engineers who were working towards developing new face detection software. Microsoft then sent out an e-mail to selected people to get a feedback on the app and within hours nearly, 30,000 people expressed their willingness to use the app, explains the Tech News Today report.

Xiaomi that sold over 2 million phones in a 12 hour online sale last month, as per CNET, is also working towards getting similar features for the Xiaomi Mi4, reports Tech New Today.
