The show has been known to keep fans waiting when it comes to mysteries in its plot and it has particularly kept one question unanswered for years already. Many are wondering since the first season what is up with the Koenigs, especially as Patton Oswalt has revealed himself three times already, each time playing a different Koenig brother. Fortunately, their secret will be revealed in the episodes to come on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Spoiler alert! This article contains “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” spoilers. Read on if you would like to know what happens next before the next episode airs.

It has been confirmed that the Koenigs will return. Patton Oswalt will be reprising his role as brothers Sam and Billy Koenig in the episode of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” that will air January 31.

The upcoming episode, titled “Hot Potato Soup,” will let viewers see Billy and Sam getting hunted down in their bid to get at the Darkhold -- and only Coulson (Clark Gregg) and company can save them. This could also mean that the questions that have been hanging for way too long about who they really are could finally get answered.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Oswalt was first seen in the first season as Eric Koenig, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent stationed at a secret base. Later on, his brother Billy was introduced, who was also stationed at a different secret base while Sam had overseen the Theta Protocol. Fans might remember this as the one that provided the last minute save through the helicarrier in “Avengers: Age of Ulton.” Later on, Eric was murdered by Hydra sleeper agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton.)

These three brothers have similarities that are too close, resulting from having grown up together. They, themselves, even mentioned at one point that there are 13 Koenig brothers. Although this was delivered as a joke, the idea of 13 Koenig brothers does not look that far-fetched. It even looks like somebody created one whole batch of Koenigs to work as Agents for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Given the current plot running the show, they might come to reveal themselves as androids who have been working amongst the agents for years. If Sam and Billy had not turned evil since they were last seen, this could mean that not all LMDs are murder machines.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC. In Australia, it airs on SyFy.
