Marilyn Monroe's famous white dress, which she wore for the movie "Seven Year Itch", was sold at an auction for a whopping $5.6 million dollars.

Debbie Reynolds, a collector of classic Hollywood costumes has sold over 3,500 separate pieces of cinematic history, including Marilyn Monroe's famous white dress. The white halter silk dress was worn by Monroe in the movie "Seven Year Itch", the one where she stood on top of a steam-releasing platform. Reynolds was only expecting the dress to sell for around $2 million, but it was sold for a staggering amount of $5.6 million dollars, with $1 million USD to go to the auction house. According to those who attended the auction, the seller became "teary-eyed" when the dress was sold at this surprising amount.

Reynolds, also an actress, has quite a respectable collection of classic movie costumes that most people would love to have. After the auction was finished, Reynolds was able to sell two more Marilyn Monroe dresses; including the one Monroe wore when she sang the infamous happy birthday song to President John F. Kennedy. The "happy birthday" dress was sold for $2 million, a lot less than the "subway" steam dress which was sold earlier.

Other highlights of the Hollywood classic movie costumes auction include one of Charlie Chaplin's bowler hats which sold for $135,000 USD. Another expensive set of memorabilia sold were Judy Garland's classic blue dress and red slippers she wore in the Wizard of Oz. The costume set came in at $1.75 million USD. Reynolds adds she plans to sell the rest of her collection through auctions, when caring for them becomes too expensive or daunting.
