Mariah Carey struggled to hold back her tears while giving a performance at the Beacon Theater in NYC on Monday, Dec 15. The Grammy award winner, who has recently split from her husband Nick Canon, appeared to be in gloomy state as she belted out a series of Christmas hits, for the audience.

She took to stage dressed in a red, cleavage-bearing gown, as she crooned "All I Want for Christmas" and "Here Comes Santa Claus." The songstress almost choked when she sang her 1993 hit ballad "Hero." Tears welled up in her eyes and her microphone fell on the stage. It remains ambiguous as to what made Carey cry during a live performance. InTouch Weekly has speculated in its report that Carey's split from Canon could be one of the reasons why the singer became emotional. Moreover, the holiday season is just around the corner and this is the first Christmas that Carey would be celebrating alone, since pulling a plug on her relationship from Canon, according to Hollywoodlife.

Canon announced his split from the songstress earlier last month. The duo is reportedly leading separate lives since August. However, Canon maintains that Carey will always remain his family. "At the same time, we're there for our children, making them the No. 1 priority and understanding they're loved and can have an amazing holiday," he said in his interview to "Good Morning America's" host Lara Spencer, as reported by InTouch.

The estranged couple is parents to 3-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan Cannon. The "America's Got Talent" host said in his previous interview that the kids are too young to realize the present state of his and Carey's relationship.

"They just love mommy and daddy so there is nothing different for them," he told MSN's Wonderwall. Canon also said that he is not getting back on the dating scene as he is "putting his family first." Though he does plan to explore his dating options in the coming times. Carey and Cannon got married in 2008. They met during the shooting of a music video "Bye Bye." They have an age gap of 10-years.
