Mariah Carey has dumped her Australian support act because she’s female, according to singer Natalia herself. The Perth songstress was due to perform as a second support act for the U.S. diva’s concert in Perth on Sunday, but was told she was being cancelled because Carey didn’t want another female on stage.

Natalie, 28, was supposed to perform at a pre-show function for VIPs at the music superstar’s “The Elusive Chanteuse Show,” but was called to hit the main stage as a second support act with former “The X Factor Australia” finalist Nathaniel. However, the promoter called her to cancel her appearance a day before the big show. Apparently, Carey didn’t want a younger female artist stealing her spotlight. Natalia was still able to perform at the VIP pre-show, though.

Natalia told 2DayFM radio hosts Sophie Monk and Merrick Watts that the 45-year-old multiple Grammy Award-winning artist objected to Natalia sharing her stage.

“That was Thursday,” Natalia told the DJs when she was informed of her main stage schedule. “I think it was Saturday around 10 or 11 o’clock I received a call that [said], ‘Sorry, Nat, that’s a no go. She doesn’t want a female.’ You can imagine the emotional roller coaster, it was heartbreaking.”

Her fans were angry on her behalf, though, claiming Carey was “threatened” by a mere Australian act who is just starting her career. However, Natalia defended the music icon, saying she doesn’t think Carey felt threatened by her.

“She’s not threatened. She was unbelievable last night. But if she could just look me in the eye and see how devastating it would have been. I was crushed.”

And although she was devastated by the sudden decision, she claimed she still thought of Carey as her “idol and inspiration.”

“There was no contract. It was an absolutely honour to have been just told that I was gonna be bumped up. I thought she was amazing. I’m not gonna lie, she looked exhausted; there’s obviously a lot going on. But she hit every high note at that show,” she said. “And I honestly thought, ‘why would you... maybe support another act, you know get me up there.' No one was ever gonna steal her limelight. But you could have kick-start maybe something for me and my career.”

She has again reiterated she understood the business aspect of the decision, defending Carey’s right to do whatever she wants.

This story is getting ridiculous!!! MARIAH can do what Mariah wants.. This is the message I was given and as much as it hurt that's it — Natalia (@nataliasvoice) November 3, 2014

Carey is currently in Australia for her “The Elusive Chanteuse” tour. She will next be seen in Adelaide on Wednesday.
