Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal said that he can now "laugh" at critics after his side, which featured only three defenders at the back, escaped Arsenal with a 2-1 victory in the Premier League.

The Dutchman has been heavily criticised in the past for being insistent on employing the 3-5-2, which often led to a defensive meltdown for the Red Devils, one way or another.

Nevertheless, despite being the weaker side during the match, LVG's charges were able to come out on top.

"If Arsenal had scored in the first 20 minutes then it is a different game," said the 63-year-old tactician.

"And then maybe I have to respond to all the questions asking why I chose the three centre-backs. But now I can laugh."

Antonio Valencia was able to take advantage of a scuffle, firing the ball at goal that deflected against Kieran Gibbs, resulting in an own goal for the Gunners. Wayne Rooney made sure that the game will be out of reach for the opposition on the break at the 85th minute, beating substitute goalkeeper Damian Martinez, who was subbed in for Wojciech Szczesny due to an injury.

Meanwhile, he also gave credit where credit was due, hailing his own shot-stopper's good decision making during the course of the match.

"Most of his saves were from outside the area and from that distance the goalkeeper has more advantage than the player shooting," he added.
