If there is one team that can pull off a come-from-behind series victory, it is the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals were down 1-2 in the National League Division Series after the Pittsburgh Pirates won Game 2 in St. Louis and Game 3 in Pittsburgh. The Cardinals won Games 4 and 5, the second one, convincingly, 6-1.

After a Game 1 rout by the Boston Red Sox in the 2013 World Series, the Cardinals were facing more or less the same predicament. The Red Sox had one of the best home records in the major leagues, winning 53 out of 81 games in Boston. In contrast, the Cardinals had just a marginally acceptable road record, winning 43 of 81 away games. In addition, Cardinal slugger Carlos Beltran was not even sure of suiting up after suffering from bruised ribs in the series opener.

However, the Cardinals hung tough and pulled away, winning Game 2 in front of a Boston crowd that had come out in droves.

Rookie sensation Michael Wacha, he of the 18 2/3 scoreless-inning streak, had a less-than-splendid first six innings, allowing two runs, three hits, and four walks even as he struck out six Boston batters. St. Louis went ahead by one run in the fourth inning, but Wacha conceded a two-run homer to David Ortiz in the sixth, making Red Sox fans believe that order was finally restored in the Hub of the Universe.

Then St. Louis happened.

Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey uncharacteristically pitched poorly in the seventh, giving up a flyball to Matt Carpenter that resulted in two Cardinals runs. Later in the inning, Beltran, who was given the go-signal by team doctors, banged in an RBI single that gave the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

It was a reversal of fortunes for Lackey, who, as a rookie like Wacha, was a phenom who won a World Series with the Anaheim Angels in 2002. Lackey appeared more like a rookie and less than an 11-year veteran of the game.

The World Series goes to Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri for Games 3 and 4. Jake Peavy and Joe Kelly will be the starting pitchers for Boston and St. Louis, respectively.
